THE QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED MOST — AND OUR ANSWERS
The DM60 is DyeMansion’s automated coloring machine for 3D-printed parts, using the Deep Dye Coloring (DDC) process. It’s built for anyone who needs consistent, production-grade color on SLS, SAF or MJF parts — from service bureaus and contract manufacturers to in-house teams in consumer goods, healthcare, automotive, and industrial sectors.
The DM60 colors parts from SLS, SAF and MJF powder-bed printing as standard, with SLA, DLP, and CDLP/CLIP resin materials available on request. Supported base materials include PA11, PA12 (and reinforced variants), and TPU, from printer OEMs such as HP, EOS, Sinterit, Formlabs, Stratasys, Farsoon and more. Ask DyeMansion’s applications team to confirm compatibility for any printer, material, or resin system not listed here.
DyeMansion’s portfolio is built primarily around powder-bed polymer 3D printing — most commonly SLS, MJF or SAF — with support for FDM/FFF and select resin (SLA/DLP/CDLP) materials on specific processes such as VaporFuse Surfacing and DM60 coloring. Supported materials include PA11, PA12 (including glass- and carbon-filled variants), TPU, TPE, PP, and select high-performance polymers such as Ultem, from printer manufacturers including HP, EOS, Stratasys, Sinterit, Farsoon, Formlabs, and Markforged. Exact compatibility varies by machine and process, so check the relevant product page or ask DyeMansion’s applications team to confirm your specific printer and material combination. There is also a material compatibility list that we provide on request.
Operating the DM60 is a three-step process: scan the RFID-chipped color cartridge, load your cleaned (and ideally surfaced) parts, then close the lid and press start. A full run takes 150 minutes. This time can be reduced by specific cartridges or DM60 Add-On Solutions (Reservoir). Parts come out colored with no added material layer — the dye penetrates roughly 0.2 mm into the part surface on EOS PA2200, varying by material and surface finish.
Yes. Parts should be cleaned first — for example on a Powershot C, X, or DUAL Performance — and surfacing beforehand is common too, because surface preparation directly affects how evenly the dye penetrates and how the final color and finish look.
The DM60’s process chamber is 80 litres (21.1 gal) measured floor to lid, and holds parts up to 390 mm in diameter and 360 mm in height, at process temperatures up to 115 °C. In build-job terms, one run holds up to three-quarters of an EOS P396 build, one full HP Jet Fusion 4200/5200 build, or close to 1.5 full-sized Stratasys H350 build jobs. Note that the 80 litre figure is total chamber volume, unlike the Powershot line’s effective-volume figures, so the two aren’t directly comparable — the build-job equivalents are the more useful basis for planning.
Each DM60 color cartridge carries an RFID chip that the machine reads automatically, loading the correct process parameters for that color and cartridge size. That removes manual program selection as a source of error and gives every run a documented, traceable link between the color used and the process applied. With the specific cartridge ID numbers batch tracking of the used dyestuff and additives is possible.
The DM60 replaces manual, open dye-bath handling with a closed, cartridge-based, RFID-tracked process, which removes most of the operator-to-operator variability that affects manual pot dyeing. The same dye formulation, temperature, and timing are applied every time, so color matching between production runs is far more predictable at scale — and you avoid the scrap that inconsistent pot dyeing produces.
See the DyeMansion Color Overview at go.dyemansion.com/DyeMansion-Color-Database-EN, and request a quote for anything not listed there. DyeMansion develops custom colors matched to RAL, Pantone, or a physical sample across all compatible materials, alongside a standard database covering 17 standard colors per supported material, the full 170-color RAL Classic range, and specialty lines such as Automotive ColorsX (UV and heat resistant), NeonX (blacklight-reactive), and custom skin tones for medical and prosthetic applications. Because Deep Dye Coloring is a chemical process, each color is validated for a specific material and finish combination rather than offered universally.
DM60 cartridges come in three types. Standard color cartridges are the foundation of the DM60 coloring process: one dyeing run per cartridge, available for all DyeMansion colors and in four sizes (S, M, L, XL). L-R (Reusable) cartridges enable multiple black dyeing runs from a single cartridge when used with a connected DM60 Reservoir, reducing handling and increasing efficiency. L-RR (Refresh) cartridges complement the L-R by topping up the existing dye bath with fresh dyestuff rather than replacing it — allowing uninterrupted production with almost zero wastewater. Both Reservoir cartridge types come in one size and are currently available for DM Black-01. Every cartridge carries an RFID chip that the DM60 reads automatically, loading the correct process parameters for that color and size. Which size you need is driven by the total surface area of the parts in a load rather than by their number or weight, since a cartridge holds a defined amount of dye — DyeMansion’s current Checklist for Optimal Dyeing Results gives the recommended maximum surface area for each cartridge size and color.
Yes. The DM60’s run history and log files record cartridge and process data, which OEMs, contract manufacturers or service bureaus use for supply-chain traceability and quality audits — for example, confirming which color batch was used on a specific automotive part. Logs can be exported for review as part of your quality documentation.
The DM60 needs oil-free compressed air, a standard power connection (socket type varies by region — confirm against your installation checklist), and a wastewater disposal plan, since the dyeing process produces process water that must be handled per local regulations. DyeMansion provides SDS documentation and a wastewater guide to support your site’s discharge or treatment planning.
Yes, for specific validated combinations. DyeMansion has ISO 10993-based cytotoxicity and skin-irritation data — for example PA2200, HP 3D HR PA12 and other commonly used powder bed materials processed with PolyShot Surfacing plus Deep Dye Coloring — supporting biocompatibility claims for dyed parts. Coverage is tied to the exact material, color, and finish combination, so confirm your specific pairing with DyeMansion’s compliance team before use in a regulated application.
Deep Dye Coloring is a water-based process, so every DM60 run produces process water that has to be handled according to your local regulations — typically either discharge under a permit from your local water authority, or collection for disposal by a licensed waste contractor. Requirements vary considerably by country and municipality, so DyeMansion provides safety data sheets for the dyes and a dedicated wastewater guide that your EHS team and local authority can use to assess the process and agree the right route. Two things reduce the volume you have to manage: the DM60 Reservoir reuses conditioned dye water across multiple runs instead of starting fresh each time, cutting both freshwater consumption and wastewater output significantly, and the ROS (Reverse Osmosis System) lowers the mineral load entering the stream in the first place. It’s worth raising wastewater early in site planning rather than at installation, since the approval route is the part least under your control.
